Bill Campbell was a radio pioneer. He, and Steve Fredericks, built sports-talk radio in Philadelphia. Bill was also a lovely man -- nice to everyone, loving to his family. He used to come to Ponzios Diner-Bakery-Bar with his wife, Jo, when I was doing shows there. After 60 years of marriage, you could tell they still loved each other. I listened to Bill before I got to WIP, and always admired the narrative he spun in his opening monologue, as well as his polite way with callers. Bill was a gentleman, but he was nobodys fool. The Dean could be tough when he needed to, and any athlete who underperformed or misbehaved would draw his wrath. Later, I had the honor of working a few shows with Bill, most notably a three-hour special on the 40th anniversary of Wilts 100-point game, which, of course, Bill called on the radio in 1962. All those years later, his clarity and ability to tell a story were amazing. And, hey, what a voice. I was saddened to hear of Bills illness yesterday, sadder to hear of his death today at age 91. Wasnt he reading those great essays on KYW just a few days ago? Ill miss Bill Campbell on a personal level. I appreciate a compliment or encouragement from anyone -- but from Bill it was like having Wayne Gretzky say, Hey, nice shot. So long, Soupy. Philadelphia will miss you.
