Biographies of visiting artists Themba Mbuli Themba Mbuli is a South African born and raised performer/Choreographer. In 2005 he debuted with his first theatre work creation “No More Crime”, a year after that he was then introduced to professional theatre in 2006 by Kent Ekberg who later became his mentor. Mbuli acquired his first professional training at Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) in 2007, immediately after Graduation he then joined Inzalo Dance and Theatre Company by Moeketsi Koena as a trainee performer (2008). He then re-joined MIDM in 2009-2010; in the company he served as a performer, dance teacher and also choreographed a dance Piece “Dark City” that won him a Pick of the Stepping Stones award with a special mention at the FNB Dance Umbrella Festival 2010. In 2011 he joined a French theatre company from Reunion Island, he was a principal dancer in a touring production ‘!AIA’ created by Philippe Pelen Baldini. Mbuli has also performed in works by other internationally acclaimed Choreographers/Directors like Gregory Maqoma, Moeketsi Koena, Sylvia Glasser, Thabo Rapoo, Jerry Mofokeng, Jaco Bouwer and Kent Ekberg. Themba Mbuli is currently a Freelance dancer/choreographer and a part time dance teacher for the Western Cape Education Department. His latest works includes “Robot Citizens” that he choreographed for Forgotten Angles Theatre Collaborative, “Dark Cell” a solo that he has already toured with in Sweden, Zimbabwe and few festivals in South Africa, and “Unlearning” duo collaboration with Linzi Lewis. Mbuli is also a co-founder together with Fana Tshabalala and Thulani Chauke of a youth development organization Broken Borders Arts Project, he is currently an Associate Artistic Director in the organization.
