Born on this day in 1912, the amazing actor, singer, dancer and choreographer Gene Kelly. One cannot possibly overstate the importance of Gene Kelly to the genre of the Hollywood musical. He sang and danced his way into our hearts (okay, our parents and our grandparents hearts) back in the 40s and 50s, as the star of Metro Goldwyn Mayers best films. Some of his best: On the Town Singin in the Rain An American in Paris Brigadoon Wow, what a talent. He had an easy style of dancing that made it look like his tap shoes were his comfy slippers; always laid back, a leisurely hoofer, the opposite of the more ballet-like dancers like Fred Astaire.... though Gene Kelly could certainly do ballet too when he wanted to.
