Both my father and grandfather went to jail. No, they were neither - TopicsExpress

Both my father and grandfather went to jail. No, they were neither thugs nor rapists. They committed no felony. They courted arrest for a noble cause. Both father and son were arrested for daring to take on the might of the colonial masters. They fought fearlessly to free the country from the yoke of the foreign rule. They were ready to pay any price for the freedom of their motherland. My dad found himself behind bars at the tender age of 15 when he was a student of Class IX. He was imprisoned in the Sylhet jail, then a part of undivided India, now a part of neighbouring Bangladesh. He was the youngest inmate of the jail at that time and he stayed there for six months. My grandfather was lodged in the Jorhat jail for one year. He was tortured during his stint in the prison. As a result, his health broke down and he never fully recovered from the trauma and physical abuse. After India won freedom, democratic elections were held and my grandfather was offered a ticket by his party to fight elections. He was so popular and respected that no opposition party was willing to field a candidate against him. Had he thrown his hat in the ring, he would have been elected unopposed. But he firmly turned down the offer saying that his poor health would not allow him to serve the people. For him, the country and the people always came first. Those were the days of idealism. Imagine a present-day politician declining an offer to contest elections! They would not hesitate to use their money and muscle power to get the coveted ticket. They would stoop to any level to further their political ambitions. Their stony hearts are not swayed by any idealism. They are driven by sheer greed for power and pelf. My granddad and dad did not leave me and my family any riches. But they have bequeathed to us a legacy and we are immensely proud of that legacy. On the 66th Independence Day, this is a tribute to a father and a grandfather from a grateful son and grandson.
