Brad Alperin, Jody Drezner Alperin, Elizabeth Lippow, Michael A. Burstein, Nancy Laurie, and anybody else you think might be interested, this article suggests, as many including myself believe, that ADHD is being over-diagnosed for the purpose of cultivating a quick medication fix to deal with unruly children spurred on by the profit motivations of drug companies, but it also suggests, more interestingly to me anyway, that the stress-related effects of school testing are another culprit in the increase in diagnosis of ADHD. I know that many of you have things to say about the whole school testing idea, as do I, but personally, I have long held that an increase in diagnosis is related to an increase in awareness which I believe would be a good thing. Is this a question of awareness, over medication, or a notable end result of school testing? These are not necessarily mutually exclusive causes. Thoughts and comments are welcome. Thank you Joseph Orlando for sharing this with me.
