Brendan Rodgers’ plans to sign Sporting Lisbon star Tiago Ilori - TopicsExpress

Brendan Rodgers’ plans to sign Sporting Lisbon star Tiago Ilori could be hijacked by Valencia, who have made an enquiry about the player just days after Liverpool’s £3.5 million bid for the defender was rejected. 20 year-old Ilori has made a handful of appearances for Sporting’s first team but plays mainly for their reserve side which competes in the Portuguese second division. The centre-back has represented Portugal at various youth levels over the years and is expected to follow in the footsteps of other Sporting Lisbon youth products, which include the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Nani. Rodgers is prepared to offer the defender regular first team action, especially as the retirement of Jamie Carragher left a major void in central defence. The Mirror revealed that Sporting turned down a £3.5million Liverpool bid for Ilori as they expect a sum closer to £6 million for the promising Portuguese youngster. Tottenham and Arsenal have also shown an interest in Ilori but Liverpool are still favourites to sign the defender this summer. Valencia are expected to hold talks with Ilori next week and Rodgers would push for another bid at the earliest to avoid losing out on yet another defensive target. - FF12
