Built in the late 1930s as a WPA project, the Timberline Lodge is located on the south side of Mount Hood, 60 miles east of Portland, Oregon. Workers used large timbers and local stone, placing intricately carved decorative details throughout the building. In 1977, it was designated a National Historic Landmark, the countrys finest example of WPA mountain architecture. The lodge served as the exterior of the fictional Overlook Hotel in the 1980 film “The Shining.”
