By W. F. KUMUYI The Wise Choice TEXT: ISAIAH 8:1-8 Key verse: “Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliahs son; Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria...” (Isaiah 8:6,7). Discontent is the sign of a tumultuous life seized by the pulling influence of forces contending for one’s attention. It is planted with a little question or doubt over God’s designs, germinates on indifference and could finally blossom into total rebellion. Worse still, the culprit may not realise how far he has strayed from God until he is neck deep in trouble. For long, God had warned the Jews of the danger of despising Him. They forgot the words as quickly as the prophet spoke them. But now, they needed something in a permanent form to remind them that God had forewarned them. This document had a title that was also the name of the prophet’s new baby. It symbolised the Assyrian Army’s defeat of Samaria and Syria. The same Assyrians, who fought and won battles for them, would now turn against them, and become a scourge and terror to them. The Jews would almost be overwhelmed, but because they had been bequeathed to Immanuel, the coming King, their heads would remain above waters; they would not be totally destroyed. Those who ignore God’s love and rebel against His guidance are invariably inviting His wrath. The pity, today, is that many do not recognise the repercussions of the choice they make. God usually would do anything to keep us from making the wrong choice, but He still allows us the freedom to decide for ourselves. His gentle care for men is likened to the “waters of Shiloah that go softly”. He has given us His grace, which makes our salvation through faith in Jesus Christ very easy. Beware of the choices you make in life and let Christ be at the very core of your life. A decision or decisions made outside of Christ have grave repercussions in time and eternity. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Those who refuse the comfort of God’s word invite the sting of His anger.
