By allowing the recently resigned Congressman to use donations for a family trip to Scotland and to further his daughter’s fledgling singing career, the Federal Election Commission has rolled out the red carpet for members of Congress to spend campaign funds on almost anything they want. CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan: It is ridiculous that candidates are now free to use campaign funds to pay for family members’ travel as long as they manage to include even a lunch or coffee with a potential donor. If a candidate’s child is seeking a tech job, why not let the campaign locate someone who will meet in San Francisco? A daughter interested in fashion?
