CALL FOR ENTRIES! TULCA Festival of Visual Art, 2013 Open Call Deadline: August 5th at 12 noon The TULCA 2013 Open Call is open to Irish and international artists working in all media. The curator is Valerie Connor, whose curatorial focus is centered on the practices and technologies of visionaries and dreamers, forecasting, prediction, foresight and data visualisation, old and new. Describing the context, she says: “I did a talk at an earlier Tulca, that started out as a reflection on international art biennials and became a consideration of the centrality of prediction technologies in our lives today: a time of advancing technological connectivity and predictive or foresight software underwriting actions in the now that affect all our tomorrows. Thinking of the world as essentially ‘data’ is being normalised rapidly outside of the ‘tech’ scene. The ‘socialisation of data’ is becoming a central part of what affects us in everyday life. To devise the curatorial context it is key for me to have the engagement of partners and artists in the discovery of shared points of interest. This approach needs and depends on activating friendships through conversation. Consider the focus for the Tulca 2013 Open Call, through the lens of this piece of dialogue scripted between Lieutenant Commander Data in the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation and an episode character, suspicious of an android’s capacity for friendship” (watch it here youtube/watch?v=qcqIYccgUdM) Q: Are you able to have friends? A: Yes Q: But you don’t have feelings do you? A: Not as such; however, even among humans, friendship is sometimes less an emotional response and more a sense of familiarity. Q: So you can get used to someone… A: Exactly. As I experience certain sensory input patterns my mental pathways become accustomed to them. The input is eventually anticipated and even missed when absent. Q: Like … A: Yes… Pre-existing work or proposals for new work will be considered for acceptance. Proposals for work that is of a live/ temporary/ experimental nature or engaged or situated in non-art contexts in Galway city are also welcome. Work cannot have been shown in Galway previously.
