!!!CAUTION!!! TL;DR WARNING !!!CAUTION!!! Alright, as this month so far has left me in pensive thought over the meaning of the universe Im in quite the bleeding-heart bare-your-soul mode so Im going to share a little of my thoughts. Maybe itd be an interesting read for some of you. Video game music has always been seen as this little niche thing that nerds or geeks (or the politically correct enthusiasts) listen to. Its something a lot of us take pride in enjoying just because its different or non-mainstream (or the politically incorrect hipster) It has always bugged me that with that fact in mind, the majority of people that I talk to regarding VGM are very rooted in what their concept of VGM should be. I mean, on one hand, you pride yourself on listening to something thats different. On the other, you dont want to venture outside your little comfort zone. This is actually magnified somewhat by the Berklee attitude, for better or worse. We get so caught up in promoting our stuff that we dont take time off to listen to what other people are up to. How many of you can say you recently went on a journey of discovery to see what your peers are up to? Or has it been a nonstop trip of nah, not related to me, dont care lalalalala I dunno, I guess Ive always been interested in how differently opposite sides of the world approach game music, and it irks me when someone claims theyre a video game music nut cant tell you some of the most famous Japanese scores, or on the flipside name the composers of the current western AAA franchises. Had that game that you always wanted to play but never had time? Get the soundtrack and listen to the soundtrack anyway. Yeah, I know thats hard for us that are in the business of using our ears while we work, but theres still always time for it, from commuting to exercise. I think I can safely say that scarcely a week goes by where I dont find something new worth listening to. (This is why the questions whos your fav composer or whats your fav soundtrack are the worst for me) We really all have something to learn from whats out there, and thats my challenge to you today. Get out of your comfort zone. Im not asking you to magically like stuff you never liked prior. Im asking you to at least take a listen and expand your horizons. As a a community of creators no man is an island. This isnt a contest.
