CHINA REWARDS BRITISH PM FOR TURNING BACK ON DALAI LAMA *** (TibetanReview.net, Dec04, 2013) Bringing Tibet to the centre of their bilateral relations, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Dec 2 pledged to enhance political and economic ties with the UK as the latters Prime Minister, David Cameron, had voiced opposition against Tibet Independence, reported China’s official Xinhua news agency Dec 2. Cameron was leading the UK’s largest ever trade delegation to China, having pledged to turn a page on Tibet after enduring months of castigation from China over what was nothing more than his handshake meeting with the Dalai Lama in London in May 2012. We two countries must insist on mutual respect and equal treatment, understand and take care of each others major concerns, properly handle sensitive issues and push for more vigor and results in the Chinese-British comprehensive strategic partnership, the report quoted Li as having told Cameron during their Dec 2 talks. A website photo accompanying the report carried an unusually large photo of Li and Cameron shaking hands. The report made it clear that Cameron’s was a delayed three-day visit, occasioned by his last meeting with the Dalai Lama in May 2012. It added that Britain now respected Chinas sovereignty and territorial integrity, recognized Tibet as part of China and did not support Tibet Independence. China considers any kind of meeting with the Dalai Lama as support for Tibetan independence from Chinese rule. To move forward in their renewed friendship, Li has suggested that the two countries bolster trade and investment, enhance fiscal and financial cooperation, deepen high-tech cooperation, strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and consolidate communication and cooperation on international and regional issues. For his part, Cameron has vowed to lobby for China to promote EU-China relations, including talks for an EU-China free trade treaty.
