CHRISTMAS TREES CAN BE A FIRE HAZARD Each year thousands of natural Christmas trees are purchased in Saskatoon. A Christmas tree is a great focal point of your celebrations; however, a Christmas tree fire is devastating. This Christmas tree fire video (youtube/watch?v=o2dNN2waoSw) shows how quickly a fire grows in a tree that has dried out. The Saskatoon Fire Department reminds residents to always purchase a fresh tree, take proper care of your tree and discard it carefully. To purchase a fresh tree: •Make sure it is bright green. •Make sure it has a strong fragrance. •Make sure that very few needles fall off when the stump is tapped on the ground. •Make sure that the needles bend and do not break. •Make sure that the resin on the stump is still sticky. •To properly care for your tree: •Keep the tree stump immersed in water at all times. This is easiest to do if you have a stand that holds at least 2-3 litres of water. •Cut the tree stump at a 45˚angle to maximize the area that will absorb the water. •Re-cut the stump if the water level goes below the stump. If that happens, the stump will seal over with resin and your tree will no longer absorb water. Tips for placing your tree: •Place your tree at least three feet away from a fireplace, heat register or television. •Never place a tree in front of an exit. To properly discard your tree: •If your tree dries out before Christmas, remove it from your house immediately and recycle it. •Do not store a dead tree inside your house or garage or leaning against the outside of your house. For information about where to recycle your tree, visit saskatoon.ca and look under “C” for Christmas Trees. Christmas tree fires are not common; however, when they do occur they are often very serious.
