COLD WEATHER UPDATE: Extreme Cold Returns This Week - Wind Chills Nearing Zero Degrees By Thursday Now is the time to make preparations for some extremely cold weather that will be impacting our state later this week. We are already dealing with a first blast of cooler weather today. You will notice a big chill in the air tonight with lows in the 20s. We will have a partly cloudy to mostly sunny sky for tomorrow however high temperatures will only reach the middle 40s. The extremely cold air will start to settle in Tuesday night as an arctic air mass drops out of Canada. A large 1056 MB high pressure cell will build towards the southeast through Wednesday and this will bring an ice cold north wind with chill values near zero degrees. It is possible parts of our area could drop below freezing Tuesday night and remain below freezing through Friday. Highs will only reach the mid 30s on Wednesday, with lows nearing 10° Wednesday night. The entire area should finally rise out of the freezing range by Friday afternoon, although a light freeze is expected again Friday night. Temperatures will continue to modify through next weekend with our next rain maker arriving on Sunday. EXTREME COLD PREPARATIONS: A hard freeze warning will likely be issued later this week with dangerous wind chill values expected (-5° to 5°). Make sure exposed pipes are well protected and faucets are covered. Also, make sure the pets have a warm shelter. Be sure to check on the elderly to make sure a dependable heat source is in place.
