CURTIS GIRLS LEAD ISLAND CONTINGENT AT PENN TWO RELAY TEAMS EARN PLAQUES WITH RECORD-SETTING OUTINGS GEORGE KOCHMAN Publication Date: April 29, 1994 Page: C3 Zone: OLD Staten Island Advance Track and field PHILADELPHIA The girls of Curtis High School had their greatest day ever in track and field yesterday at the 100th running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. Running in ideal weather, Joe Sicilians girls set two Staten Island records in winning their sections of the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays, and earning their first ever Carnival plaque. Staten Islanders in general had fine days. Notre Dame Academy won silver medals in their 4x400 heat, and New Dorp was third in their section. In addition, Wagner College broke its own school record in winning the Collegiate Track Conference 4x400 title, and former Tottenville star Tracey Capper, now of South Carolina, ran well under her personal best time in the college championship 3,000-meter run. The Curtis 4x400-meter relay team set the tone early in the program. Ordinary passes on the first two legs put Curtis back in third, but Kyla Peakes tremendous third leg opened significant daylight on the field. Chareese Khamis, Stephanie Skeete, Peake, and Jania Wright ran 51.06 seconds, shaving .01 off the previous Island mark, set in 1992 by a Port Richmond quartet. New Dorps girls were a pleasant surprise, moving from seventh to second on a big third leg by Shawna Bishop (1:01.9). ``I was tired, but I had to do well for my team, said Bishop. ``I was pushing myself. Anchor leg Shameeka Styles also pushed, but maybe a bit too hard in the first 200 meters. Gold medals and a plaque seemed a possibility, but Styles tied up badly in the final 150 meters. A tearful Styles said later, ``I was out too fast, and it was hard at the end. I feel as if I let my team down. But the realization that her team had won medals softened the hurt. Curtis was up last, and received a big 59.8 leadoff leg from Lathea Knight, but the Warriors were only third after the first leg. Tonneda McBride, the Islands best horizontal jumper, ran an easy first 200, then exploded into the far turn. The time wasnt great, but her personal best 1:02.5 leg opened daylight. Peake, running her second race of the day, responded with a 1:00.1, and Andrea Silvas 59.1 leg was just enough to outlean the Pennsbury anchor girl. Curtis ran 4:01.62 for its second Island record of the day, with Pennsbury timed in 4:01.66. ``We worked very hard for this, said an elated Sicilian. ``Lathea Knight gave the team stability and Andreas just beginning to come into her own. Knight answered, ``We had to do it here. We didnt make the 4x800, so we put our hearts into this race. Silva chimed in. ``I felt fine. I had to push myself. I threw myself at the line, but I feel like a million bucks. Wagner College earned its first set of gold medals at the Carnival in setting a school record of 3:59.30. Jennifer Godley (59.8), Rosa Alaimo (1:00.5), Rosemarie Gioia (59.5), and Nicole Brown (59.4) carried the baton for Jim Schletzs team. Capper, a former Advance All Star, was 14th in the college championship 3,000 meters in a personal best 9:43.5. NOTES: Kerry Moloughney ran 1:00.3 for Manhattan College on her teams 4x400-meter relay. Manhattan team dropped the stick on the first leg, leaving Moloughney some 50 meters behind the field ...
