Caffeine is widely used as an ergogenic aid by strength and endurance athletes alike. Despite its tremendous popularity, there is still much research to be done on caffeine as a performance aid. The following paper describes the current state of evidence regarding caffeine, and is a great read for those interested in using it for a pre-workout boost. jissn/content/7/1/5 A few interesting notes: 1) As a pre-workout supplement, caffeine tablets/powders appear to be more effective than a similar dose from coffee, and 2) Although some effects of caffeine consumption are attenuated by habituation, it appears that chronic users still derive ergogenic benefits from acute consumption. While more research is needed on caffeine use in resistance training, some current research, along with the multifaceted nature of caffeine’s physiological effects on a number of tissues/systems, leads me to believe that a performance benefit is likely. Take care, buddy!
