Californias Attorney General Kamala Harris must be related to PAs Attorney General Kathleen Kane! One reason Democratic reformers are reluctant to stick out their necks is what happens to those who do. Witness how San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed was tag-teamed by public unions and Attorney General Kamala Harris when he tried to give California voters a chance to vote on pension reform. Mr. Reed sought to prevent a reprise by suing in February to force the AG to rewrite his initiatives summary. However, Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Allen Sumner this month sided with the AG. The court must presume her language is accurate, absent clear and convincing proof otherwise, the judge ruled. The mayor has now abandoned his initiative for this Novembers ballot, though he intends to try again in 2016. We admire his courage and optimism, but Ms. Harris wont be leaving her job as wordsmith so soon. Thus Mr. Reeds reform may have to wait until a less union-friendly Attorney General wins election. Perhaps the term-limited Mr. Reed, who once worked in private practice, would consider running. The office could use a politician with integrity and a sound legal mind. The bigger story here is how Democratic politicians like Ms. Harris have usurped Californias initiative process, which was intended to help citizens check unaccountable government.
