Call to action, fellow German teachers: Last fall, I was in a meeting in another group Im in (not teaching related), and one of the other officers mentioned that she had a few hundred teachers from three states coming to a workshop she had helped organize. I was immediately intrigued, especially when I heard that it was about the Holocaust and using primary sources (ie Authentic materials in the form of interviews with Holocaust victims discussing life before 1939). It had not even occurred to them to invite German teachers. My colleague and I attended and were welcomed. It was obvious that they thought, Oh yes! German teachers teach about the Holocaust, too! They then chose my German-teaching colleague to represent South Carolina at the summer institute offered at Columbia University. The director at Columbia tried to veto that decision, stating that German teachers have no business teaching that subject. In other words: Someone who supports teaching about the ultimate discrimination so that it will never happen again, is discriminating against a whole other group of people. In any case, that same director will be speaking at this years SC workshop (she was not there last year...like I mentioned, the speakers last year were happy we were there). Ive attached the flyer and registration form in case youre interested.... My colleague and I will be there and hope that there are several other German teachers this year!:
