Canon Del Cobre Hoodoo Garden Abiquiu Organized Hike Saturday, January 17, 2015 8:30 AM High above the valley of Canon Del Cobre (Copper Canyon) lies an incredible red and purple hoodoo garden ! I have never seen pictures of these or even heard of them. They lie under the knife edge and cannot be seen as they are in a bowl. I was stunned to find these hoodos in such numbers and truly amazing forms and colors ! In the first photo, I named these hoodoos Los Guardias or the Guards in english. They really do guard the inner area which is shaped like the columns of the Coliseum. You just have to see this in person to believe how amazing this is. The views are spectacular as we are approximately 600 ft over the highway where we start. In the second photo you see El Cucuy or the boogieman in english. Behind him are some very interesting mushroom shaped striped hoodoos. The third photo shows the back of Los Guardias and the only entrance into the north part of the canyon. Its huge back there ! Would take several days to explore. It should be a wilderness or state park, look at these amazing things ! In the fourth photo you see El Dragon or the dragon for obvious reasons. The head lays on a striated bottom. In the fifth and final photo, you see the knife edge and all the color and majesty of the immediate area. Most of the hike is up and over a series of arroyos but not very much vertical. Its just a slow rise until we get near the knife edge then the terrain gets tough. You have to be careful here. Lots of round rocks and dirt that gives way as well as large rocks that do move. We will climb up the natural water ways which are steeped with rocks. I cannot stress enough that each step you take is critical in this area. The rocks are jagged, they move, care and caution must be taken. It only takes a couple of hours to get to the hoodoo garden from the road. Spectacular scenery is around every corner. The famous red, yellow and white bluffs line the southern wall. You will see the chocolate rock as well as a thin razor of black volcanic rock jutting out on an anticline near the main arroyo. The majority of the canyon is lined with brilliant red/orange rock. Copper Canyon though is not named after this. It is named because of two copper mines that were constructed in the 1850s. This is a rescheduled hike. The cloud layer was so low that we would not have been able to see anything had we gone. We really want nice weather for this hike and beautiful sun shining on this incredible area. The forecast calls for 49 for a high. Dress in layers just in case. Bring poles if you have them. This is not an easy hike. I would put it on the slightly strenuous side of moderate only because of the terrain and not how long it is or how high we go up. Ive picked out some great places for snacks and bring your lunch. Also, bring alot of water as this is an arid area with no water source. We can have lunch at the hoodoo gardens and take in the spectacular views !
