Carrier Sekani Tribal Council Hosts Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Carrier Sekani Tribal Council is pleased to announce that two experts from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will be visiting Prince George to carry out an inquiry on the issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women in Canada. This visit is the direct result of Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) and the Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA) working in collaboration to invite IACHR to Canada. Carrier Sekani Tribal Council then sent forward a resolution requesting the Commission visit Prince George. Tribal Chief Teegee said “We recognize the significance of this visit, as it is the first time that these international human rights experts have come to Canada to address the rights of women, and the rights of indigenous women and girls in particular. “ CSTC Tribal Chief Terry Teegee has been informed that the experts will be visiting Ottawa, Prince George and Vancouver from August 6-9th 2013. This is the time allotted by the Federal Government to the IACHR to conduct their work. To maximize the Commissioners time as well as to ensure that they hear from a variety of families from across the country, the CSTC and NWAC will be hosting a special session specifically for family members who have a missing or murdered loved ones in Prince George. This session will take the form of an in person meeting at the Skylight Room of the Ramada Hotel (444 George Street) on August 8th from 3:00 – 8PM.Victim family members from Prince George and surrounding First Nations have been invited to attend the session. Chief Teegee stated that the Tribal council welcomes the international investigation because to date Canada has refused to conduct their own investigation into missing and murdered women.
