Cars kill while traffic cops sleep Alkesh Sharma, TNN | Sep 11, 2013, 07.18 AM IST CHANDIGARH: Is overspeeding proving fatal mostly during the nights? The facts indicate that. From June to August, 25 persons died in road accidents, with 19 losing their lives in the night alone. Here are some of the recent ones. On July 24 night, a rashly driven Audi hit a Tavera, killing three college students near sectors 17-18 traffic light junction. The 25-year-old accused, who was a Panchkula-based businessman, ran away from the spot after boarding an auto-rickshaw. On August 7, foreign dreams of a 22-year-old youth were shattered after his bike was hit by a fast driven unknown vehicle in the inner market of Sector 9 during late night. The victim had to take a flight for UK next week, where he had taken admission in a leading university. Doctors amputated one of his legs during treatment. On August 19 night, a 40-year-old cyclist was crushed to death by a speeding car near Sukhna lake. If most of the traffic violations, resulting in accidents and deaths take place during late nights, why traffic cops are setting up nakas to curtail overspeeding only during the daytime? What is stopping them from curbing the free movement of killer wheels in the night? These questions are troubling the minds of city residents. "During nights, there are incidents of car racing, road rage and you can frequently spot hooligans driving cars at a maddening speed, endangering the lives of pedestrians and other motorists. But there is no police naka to catch the violator or impound their vehicles. In the absence of nakas, these delinquents have a gala time on the wide roads of Chandigarh," said Kritika Bansal, who runs a coffee shop in Sector 10. Mandeep Singh, a city-based entrepreneur, said, "You just look at the graph of fatal accidents in Chandigarh. Most of them are occurring during night when there is less rush on roads as compared to day time. Police have cited reasons of overspeeding and drunken driving behind these incidents then why they are not doing anything to curb motorists to have free run on roads."
