** Cash mobs mentioned in CUANY The Point ** The Credit Union Association of New York’s Young Professionals Commission hosted a series of “cash mobs” earlier this month, which netted more than $2,500 for locally owned businesses throughout New York. Cash mobs are groups of individuals who gather to make purchases at local businesses in a show of community support. The events were held Oct. 16-18 in recognition of International Credit Union (ICU) Week. From Buffalo to New York City, nearly 150 credit union supporters—including credit union CEOs, management, staff and members—participated in the 12 separate events. Each cash mob group left behind cards that expressed thanks on behalf of the state’s credit unions and their members. “Participating in the ICU Week cash mobs was a very cool experience. It was nice to meet small business owners, but doing that as part of a larger, state-wide initiative truly made it feel special,” said New York City participant and Commission member Mike Mattone, AVP of public relations and corporate communications at Municipal CU. “The idea that credit unions and young professionals throughout the state came together to create these events, drive their local economies and engage with their community partners was a shining example of the credit union movement in action. I’m proud to have been a part of it.”
