Catastroika: They privatise even on weekends... Privatisation, exemplified by Germanys Treuhand, is not only financial but political; a way to obliterate your competition and with it democracy. It is interesting that West Germany used the infrastructure of East Germany to move its own goods while privatising Eastern German public sector, and therefore the country, in its entirety. This is a brilliant documentary in Greek, German and English set in modern day Greece but siting key events in European and global politics and economic such as: Britains miners strikes following Margaret Thatchers war on miners unions in the 80s and John Majors public sector sell off of 1993; the great Russian sell off and sell out of the same time; and the converse fortification of the Germanys tremendously powerful Treuhand or Trust Agency - if it wasnt so abysmal a subject I would bother to make a play on words at this point - which is the instrumental force behind the latest and total privatisation scandal in history, namely of the entire country of Greece. I had to post this as an antidote to Britains newly admiring attitude towards Germany as expressed earlier this week by none other than David Cameron. I mean, what kind of beacon of hope is a country that economically colonised its own population? The documentary turns its attention to the privatisation of utilities towards the end, especially drinking water, the implicit message being that drinking water should to continue to be relatively free despite the relentless pressure for aggressive privatisation of water globally and other fundamentally undemocratic practices courtesy of the IMF. On that note, Thames Water plc is privatised (1989 Water Act) and we in the UK pay comparatively high prices for our water in relation to Europe. As global water tariffs continue the upward trend the government is powerless to regulate Thames Water plc., as are we.
