Law enforcement officers with limited negotiations skills are at a disadvantage during these encounters. In most instances officers react inappropriately because they are not equipped with the proper negotiations skills. In this course, utilizing basic negotiations skills would serve to increase the law enforcement officer’s safety and efficiency. General Structure and Philosophy of the Program In today’s world of increasing crime, suicides, domestic violence, and terrorism, any of us could be placed in the position of negotiator. You may be the first asset on the scene and have to do your best to prevent the escalation of a situation until help arrives. From Firefighter to Fire Chief and Police Officer to Police Chief, this is training you need. This course is designed to give you the skills needed to save lives, prevent injuries, and better protect your fellow team members. This is interactive training complete with classroom instruction followed up with mock scenes and role players to give you the experience you will need. Developing proper negotiations skills is comparable to developing the ability to shoot accurately or to play a sport well. Understanding the structure of the English language and the meaning of key word is important, but the ability to understand language when spoken and to verbalize the language is developed only through extensive practice. Throughout the training program, participants will be in an active crisis negotiations status. During this constant crisis status participants will be exposed to the proper usage of active listening skills, emotional labeling skills, summarizing skills, paraphrasing skills and other key elements that are involved in crisis negotiations process. Participants will be in an active status throughout the program, including evening, night and meal time hours. The instructional day is extended to an average of 10-12 hours by planned activities requiring the use of negotiations skills. Participants will be separated into shifts with some personal time scheduled during shift swaps. Living and dining quarters will be separate from the training areas to provide to minimize interference with active scenarios during the course of study. Participants are required to stay on sight for the duration of the training. Intense student participation is essential to the development of proper negotiations skills within this short time frame. Consequently, only two hours of each instructional day is devoted to lecture, with the remainder of the day centered on active scenarios. The emphasis of the program as a whole is to properly understand the negotiations process and making good sound decision during critical stages of the negotiations process. The ability to communicate and listen well is paramount. Attendance The program will be most beneficial to those with basic negotiations experience. The training is an advanced negotiations course for officers and agents whose assignments require them to communicate with hostile individuals. The program is developed on the premise that the participant has some prior negotiations experience, however participants with some knowledge of negotiations but little or no practical experience may also benefit from the program. All participants are expected to participate in the program for the entire 72 hours of training. Failure to do so will result in the participant not receiving a certificate of completion.
