Cech vs Courtois - Who should be Chelseas No.1? - TopicsExpress

Cech vs Courtois - Who should be Chelseas No.1? Chelsea have Petr Cech, who is one of the greatest goalkeepers the Premier League has ever seen, and they also have Thibaut Courtois, who they signed in 2011, but has yet to feature for the Blues. Its his performances at Atletico Madrid which have really opened the eyes of many European clubs, as he has grown into one of the best goalkeepers around, winning a number of honours and cracking the Belgian national team, all at the age of 21. Thibaut Courtois has barely started his career and has achieved an incredible amount in such a short space of time, it comes as no surprise that many fans cannot wait to see him and his Belgium side in action at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil next year. But, when his third loan spell with Atletico Madrid is over, Courtois is not interested in returning to Chelsea, simply to deputise for Petr Cech. Yes, Cech has played a pivotal role in Chelsea?s rise to the top in recent years, but how much longer can he keep Courtois out of the team for? Although the Belgian shot-stopper wouldnt be interested in playing under Cech, he still signed a new four-year deal last year, but still claims he will not be sitting on the bench. He was quoted as saying: ?I want to play, I will not be sitting on the bench. At Atletico I feel great and being here allows me to play in the Champions league. I?ve grown a lot at Atletico, especially last season when we won the European Super Cup and the Copa Del Rey. ?I?ve made great progress, especially in terms of speed, reflex and experience. I am in my best form and I feel like I am among the five best goalkeepers in the world.? Perhaps a bold statement, but nevertheless you cannot deny that he is managing to back it all up, and the scary part is that he is only 21-years-old, imagine at 25 or 26 what he will be like, easily on top of the world. I agree with him, he should not be playing second fiddle to Cech, no disrespect to the Blues keeper because we all know everything he has achieved and what he is capable of, but I believe Jose Mourinho needs to give Courtois priority over Cech. He is younger, and showing that he is one of the best at such a young age; sure Chelsea fans would love to see both battling it out for the number one jersey but one would be disappointed over the other, and the side would have a lot more to lose if they give priority to Cech. The La Liga loan rules indicate that a player can be loaned only three years in a row, so if Thibaut is looking to return to Spain, which he is interested in, Chelsea will have no decision but to sell him, not loan him. What happens when Cech retires? Or in some other dimension, he is sold? What do Chelsea do? Who do they fall back on? Thibaut won?t be there. Keeping the future star will only result in positives, as he is more solid, consistent and younger, considering that both offer a similar level of play at this point. For a team which is trying to get younger and maintain their place as one of Europe?s best, giving Courtois priority is the best decision. If they decide to sell him and keep Cech, they will be paid handsomely for it, but it will definitely be a decision they live to regret. What do you Chelsea fans think? Do you want Cech or Courtois donning the number one jersey next season? Have your say below. Write for GiveMeSport!
