Cesafi set to kick off its 13th season 1 -AA+A Saturday, July 27, 2013 CEBU CITY – The Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Incorporated (Cesafi), the city’s premier collegiate league, is set to kick off its 13th season at the Cebu Coliseum in August 3. The tournament will start with a Palabas presentation by the ten Cesafi member schools at 1:00 p.m., to be followed by the opening match consisting of the University of Visayas (UV) Cobras versus the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, in the high school level and the Cobras versus Warriors, in the college level. Commissioners, referees, table officials, coaches, and all seven college team players have undergone a mandatory drug testing last June 22 to 25. Those who have found positive or have failed to adhere will not be allowed to participate. Romy Guevarra, former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) referee, will also conduct a refresher course for the officiating officers and coaches from July 29 to August 1. Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy Jr., in a press conference Friday, said this year’s playoffs will be more exciting, because of the added foreign imports in some teams. He said there is no need for more security, because it is the responsibility of the coaches to take care of the temperament of their players and fans. Steve Alcoseba of Smart Communication, the official sponsor of the 13th season, said their partnership with Cesafi is part of their commitment to help promote sports and to contribute to the national goal of finding the next Filipino athletes who will shine globally. Alcoseba said the company will provide Smart-Gilas Federation International de Basketball Association (Fiba) jackets to the champion team. Coaches Councilor Raul Alcoseba of the defending champion South Western University (SWU) Cobras, Bambel Durano of the UV Lancers, Fr. Glynn Ortega and Jonathan Saso of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars, expressed their preparedness and confidence in the video below. Also present in Friday’s conference were coaches Alex dela Torre (Cebu Institute of Technology-University), Julian Macoy (USC), and Rodulfo del Rosario (Cebu Eastern College). Schools are encouraged to bring their own cheering squads to enlighten the games and to show support for the players. Students with identification cards (ID) will be allowed to enter in the general entrance for free on the opening ceremony. Gate tickets are available at P40 (general entrance), P60 (upper box), P80 (lower box), P100 (stage). Students with valid IDs are entitled to a 50 percent discount. The Sun.Star website at sunstar.ph will cover live all the basketball games as the official web partner of Cesafi. Team rooster, game results, and updates will be posted in the website.
