Character actors are often ignored and underappreciated, but whoever talks about character actresses? Now is that really fair? There are a number of great scene stealers out there and sometimes they get a supporting actress nod. Most of the time they are just ignored or forgotten. Here are some of my favorites: Marcia Gay Harden who was one two supporting actress Oscars. The first for Pollock and the unforgettable performance in Mystic River. Patricia Clarkson is always a rock. Either playing Emma Stone’s mom in Easy A or Lars’ therapist in Lars and the Real girl she is solid and scene stealing at the same time. Another scene stealer in Shutter Island. She got her Oscar nomination for Pieces of April. Judy Greer has an incredible range and is equally good in comedy as she is a drama. I think I remember her first as an office worker in What Women Want. Wonderful rival in 13 going 30, prissy sister in the Village, and if you haven’t seen it one of the ultimate scene stealing performances in The Descendants, please rent it if you haven’t already. Great movie!!! Rose Byrne is a wonderful actress that everyone should know about. She has done a lot of “popular” movies lately, but I want to talk about her more indy stuff. Just saw her as Bradley Cooper’s wife in Place Beyond the Miles. Just couldn’t keep my eyes of the screen when she in the scene. Talk about a master of subtleties. Want to see an incredible performance? Just rent Wicker Park. I could make a list a mile long, but I would like to close with the late Britney Murphy. Before she was the overly skinny (perhaps anorexic, sad) starlet she was a slightly pudgy character actress. First saw her as Cher’s “project” in Clueless. Great performance on an underrated movie based on the English classic, Emma. Then an incredible performance in Girl Interrupted. Yes that was her as the very sad Daisy. Many don’t know, but she did the voice of Luanne in King of the Hill. LOL
