Check out this health tip that I saw on Health Tip of the Day: Severe calorie restriction has been found to turn on longevity genes in a wide variety of life forms, including humans. Conditions of severe stress like starvation stimulate a family of genes called sirtuins, which to preserve life, cancel the effects of aging. Since living in starvation is not an overly appealing thought for most of us, one alternative is to increase consumption of a compound called EGCG (epigallococatechin-3-gallate) found in green tea. Drinking green tea will not compensate for a poor diet, but 5-6 cups daily (or in supplements) combined with a healthy diet and exercise might contribute to increased longevity.
