Chico high schools ask to jointly plan sports facilities CHICO — Principals from both Chico High School and Pleasant Valley High School will appear before the Chico Unified School District board of trustees to discuss creation of a master plan for high school athletics facilities. Chico High’s Jim Hanlon and John Shepherd from PVHS will present the board with a “cooperative plan” to work toward future athletics facilities. For the last couple of years, both CHS and PVHS have used the Asgard Yard football facilities on the Pleasant Valley campus as their home football field. “For a number of years, a large portion of our community and the board of education has recognized the need to have the athletic facilities at the comprehensive high schools improved,” says an agenda document prepared by Mike Weissenborn, CUSD director of facilities and construction, as well as the principals. The goal of the presentation is to get the trustees to “ recognize” the facility needs identified by the two high schools and authorize each school to “ pursue funding for design services for the first phase of implementation.” Besides the athletics facilities consideration, the board will conduct its fourth meeting related to the district’s facilities master plan. The goal of the plan is to eventually identify specific projects that will be funded through Measure E dollars. Measure E is a $ 78 million school bond that was passed last year by voters in the district. Before the measure was passed, the district promised that all of the bond- funded projects would be subjects of extensive public and board review prior to their acceptance. The board will be asked to select from three different options aimed at making more room for elementary students. The proposals involve building a new school, adding classrooms on existing campuses, or changing junior high schools from housing just seventh- and eighth-grade students to being middle schools with classes for sixth- through eighth grade students.
