Children who belong to uniformed groups such as Girl Guides, - TopicsExpress

Children who belong to uniformed groups such as Girl Guides, Scouts, Brownies, Beavers, Rainbows, St John’s Ambulance cadets etc were very proud to wear their special uniforms to school today in honour of ‘World Thinking Day’. These children were invited to the front of our assembly and we admired their uniforms and learnt a little bit more about their particular groups. Mrs Tomes and Mrs Davis gave us a very interesting and informative talk about the history of the scout movement and shared their own experiences of being Brownies and Guides. They are both still associated with these with their own families. Our local area is very connected with the Scout movement’s history – did you know, that the very first Scout camp organized by lord Baden-Powell was on Brownsea Island? World Thinking Day is usually held on the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell (1857-1941) who is recognised as the founder of the modern scout movement. His birthday is 22 February, but because this is during half term, we gave children the opportunity to wear their uniforms today, before we break for half term, instead. Mrs Davis and her family are very involved in a local troop, where her husband is a Scout leader: First Parkstone, which is Lady Baden-Powell’s own (no less!). This group was established in February 1908 and were the second Scout group, following on the heels of the first one established by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907. Mrs Davis showed us a letter from Lady Baden- Powell written to the Scout group, and brought in their scout group’s special flag, embroidered with the motto, ‘Be Prepared’.
