Chorister Auditions for St Nicholas Schola Cantorum, Sunday 21st September, 2014 This new choir (established September, 2012) offers an exciting new musical opportunity for the children of Galway: • Be part of an 800 year old tradition • Receive highly specialized vocal and musical training • Participate regularly in services and sing at special events For centuries, children have received a priceless musical education as choristers of cathedrals and churches. Galway’s ancient collegiate church was no exception; from 1486, the college vicars were responsible for the training of boys to sing at the daily services. Whilst the college no longer exists, there is now a new opportunity in Galway for children to develop high-level musical skills through membership of the new St Nicholas Schola Cantorum. The unique training of the church chorister has been the foundation for many brilliant careers in music. Who is eligible? Boys and girls aged 8-14, from all religious traditions and none Who are the leaders? The Choristers are trained by Mark Duley, Director of the Schola Cantorum and organist of St Nicholas’, with assistance from other tutorial staff and supported by a parents’ committee. What is the time requirement? The choristers meet weekly on Sunday afternoons for two hours (including classes for vocal training, sight singing and theory as well as a full rehearsal), and sing at the principal Sunday morning service up to once a month. There are three singing terms: Autumn, Spring, and Summer, of approximately 11, 11 and 8 weeks respectively. The singing terms are arranged around school mid term breaks etc. All choristers are expected to attend all rehearsals and events. What is the cost? There is a subscription for each chorister of €70 per term. All music, robes and other materials are provided by the church. What is the procedure for joining the choir? The audition is straightforward, consisting of simple voice tests and lasting about ten minutes. Candidates do not already have to be able to read music; all that is required initially is a clear voice and a quick ear.
