Christian Film Production Tips: Hello everyone, happy Sunday to you all. Dan Hennah and Peter Jackson read the book written by J.R.R. Tolkien which is titled The Lord Of The Rings and they started thinking about the location of the middle-earth according to the description of the writer. They both agreed that the best place for the shoot is New Zealand, because it fits into the description of the writer. Dan Hennah is one of the best production designer, I have learnt lots of things from him, and some others like him. These are the nominees for the best production designer in the year 2013 academy award: American Hustle – Judy Becker (Production Design), Heather Loeffler (Set Decoration) • Gravity – Andy Nicholson (Production Design), Rosie Goodwin and Joanne Woollard (Set Decoration) • The Great Gatsby – Catherine Martin (Production Design), Beverley Dunn (Set Decoration) • Her – K.K. Barrett (Production Design), Gene Serdena (Set Decoration) • 12 Years a Slave – Adam Stockhausen (Production Design), Alice Baker (Set Decoration) Please you may download this screenplay to learn some skills from the gurus: d97a3ad6c1b09e180027-5c35be6f174b10f62347680d094e609a.r46.cf2.rackcdn/film_scripts/12YAS_SCRIPT_BK_COVER_PAGES_FINAL.pdf Copy that link into your browser to download the screenplay. For the records, we may continually refer back to scripting and screenplay in these posts because filming process is interconnected. I apologize ahead for I am going to be very blunt in this post, I believe thats what we need for a turnaround! Production design is the art of design of a production (as simple as it sounds, lol). Production design is about creative work of art that brings a script to the most beautiful reality. Production design makes production come to life. Production design is a very valuable aspect of production which we are yet to fully embrace in Christian film industry. This is an act whereby, a creative and artistically gifted individual picks a script and visualizes the scene in his mind, picking out the details of the picture in his mind, looking at the smallest and the tiniest particle in his mind, that can best describe what the director wants to see. It is also an act where the creative personnel thinks about what can beautify the scene, what are the things that the character needs on the set, what kind of character is involved in the scene, what is his way of life, who is he or she, how many characters are in the scene, what time of the day is the incidence on the scene, how spacious is the venue, what do we have on set, what should we add to the set, how comfortable is the set for the character, what can best describe the situation of the scene that can be added or created? These and other questions will be asked by a production designer to actually design the production; however, he cannot do this without seeing the location or the detailed pictures of the locations. Talking about seeing the location before a production designer can actually design a production is a very important issue. Now, apart from those ministries where their directors are also the producers, hardly will you see an external director in Christian film industry, visit a location before the day of the shoot- and that is why our production has been the way it is. I think its high time we start seeing our film production ministry as a profession and a business. Many directors are at fault in this including me. I directed my first movie in the year 1996 but I had worked in other peoples production as a crew member and cast; I had also directed films without knowing anything about the location before going on set. How in the world will a director go to direct a movie at a location he knows nothing about? He then gets on set looking for camera angles, what do we need on this set, is this place good enough for this scene, can we get somewhere else? and so on… What are we really doing? I know we only have few directors in our midst, but those few need great improvement including me! For a director not to see a set before getting to the location is totally unprofessional, I am sure all you directors will agree with me, I mean no harm. When we get to directing aspect of production I will share the little that I have learnt and that I am still learning. We have a lot more to talk about concerning production designing, I hope those students that came for our training last year are reading this because we couldnt touch all aspects because of the limited time, we had two weeks to learn a whole lot, but thank God for the success; some that came as novices are now editors at their various places. Within the next two weeks or more, we will be treating production design and highlighting ways to move our industry to greater heights. Till next week, stay tuned and God bless...
