Church Service Hit with Grenade Attack Right in the Middle of Prayer BY STAFF IN CHRISTIAN NEWS · JUNE 11, 2013 By Staff Blogger During an open-air prayer meeting in Mombasa, at around 7:00 p.m. last Sunday, a grenade was thrown from a motorcycle into the Christian worshippers’ service. A similar attack took place just 90 minutes later in Nairobi. The Mombasa grenade injured more than 12 people and in Nairobi four people were hurt. The Nairobi device was apparently thrown from a car. No arrests were made until the following day. A similar attack occurred almost exactly one year ago in Mombasa. However, grenades which have been thrown at local bars, pubs and bus stations have been an ongoing occurrence in Nairobi since Kenya invaded Somalia to pursue Islamic terrorists. African Union troops from Uganda and Burundi have been helping Kenya to rid itself of the Al Shabab militant Islamic terrorists and roust them from their strongholds. Al Shabab is affiliated with the terrorist group Al Qaida. The ousting of these terrorists has been successful in Somalia, which is now returning to a normal way of life but in Kenya they are still suffering from militant outbursts of violence. Kenyan authorities think it likely that the attacks in Mombasa and Nairobi were carried out by Al Shabab supporters. However, they are extremely concerned about the apparent coordinated attacks which came within an hour and half of each other. Door to door searches are now being carried out in the areas around the bombings as well as previously suspected hangouts of terrorist members or supporters in various parts of Nairobi and Mombasa. The tourism industry in Nairobi and Mombasa are concerned that the recent bombings, so close to the start of the high season in July, will affect the country’s attraction to tourists and have a big effect on the country’s economy. However, the Kenyan security organization and their African counterparts have apparently done a good job at airports and hotels in keeping the Al Shabab from completing their threats of major retaliation.
