Civil Society lauds LG’s move LG issues directions to Set up Central point to register requirements of Critical Patients Port Blair, Oct 29: In a welcome move the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands today urged the Administration to set up a Central Point to register requirements of needy critical patients of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Following reports published by local media that in the case of a certain patient currently undergoing treatment at Chennai inadequate amount has been released from the Lt Governor’s Relief Fund for his medical treatment, the Administration today clarified that financial assistance for medical treatment is released on the basis of report and estimate from the Directorate of Health Services and the concerned Deputy Commissioner of the District. “Based on the report an initial amount is sanctioned and released. This amount is released to the Hospital Authority on receipt of the medical bills from the hospital. Subsequent assessment is further assessed and, thereafter, if required fund is released. It has been further clarified that the relief is in addition to the arrangements already in place on behalf of the A&N Administration. While accepting the fact that the financial assistance may not be enough for meeting the needs of the islanders, it is equally important that the civil society make efforts to help the needy and share the responsibility,” the press release added. The press release further added that the Lt Governor is conscious of the difficulties faced by the Islanders in this regard and has directed the Administration to work out an arrangement at the earliest whereby needy persons or patients in critical condition can register their requirements at a central point, under the supervision of the Directorate of Health Services, who processes the case so that they don’t have to personally pursue the case. “It has also been noticed that there are cases where financial assistance for medical case was sanctioned in the past but such patients or member of the family have not responded despite intimation send to them, which blocks much needed funds for other patients,” the press release added.
