Cloudburst, flash floods wreaks havoc in Tral village Property and crops worth lakhs damaged Scores of cattle washed away CNS: Dozens of houses were destroyed and crops worth lakhs of rupees damaged due to a cloudburst in south Kashmir’s Zuistan area of Tral town on Wednesday night. Eyewitnesses told CNS that at during the dead of night a cloudburst occurred some 3 kilometres away from Zuistan at a place where shepherds and Gujjar Bakarwal community take their cattle for grazing. “This place is locally known as ‘Nai’ and shepherds usually spent their night along with their cattle. Soon after the cloudburst, flash floods submerged the entire locality and we left all the belongings behind to save our lives,” Ghulam Hassan Dar told CNS whose house was damaged completely in the flash floods. Reports said that the flash floods completely damaged the 2 kilometres Gulistan Prongam, Zuistan road. Official sources said that there are apprehensions that scores of people from Gujjar Bakarwal community might have gone missing and possibly feared dead. However, no Official confirmed the death of any person in the calamity. Reports said that scores of cattle were washed away by flash floods and all the crops and orchards were completely damaged rendering people aghast. Talking to CNS, Tehsildar Tral, Rouf-ul-Rehman said a team from District Administration Pulwama, headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Shah Faisal visited the spot and took stock of the situation. “Zuistan and its adjacent areas are submerged in water and everywhere you could see mud and water which presents a devastated look,” he said. He said damage to property was yet to be assessed. Naib-Tehsildar, Tral, Mohammad Younis Bangroo said that a ration depot along with ration, a Masjid, a house of one namely Reyaz Ahmed Dar son of Ghulam Mohammad, a High and Primary School Buildings, public bathroom and scores of sheds have been completely damaged due to flash floods that resulted due to cloudburst. “Fifteen people were rescued by police during the timely rescue operation and one of the injured was shifted to sub-district hospital,” a police official said adding no causality has been reported yet. “I jumped out from the window after another house was washed away by flash floods. People ran helter and skelter to save their lives. No one was able to save his property and other belongings,” one of the witnesses told CNS. The drains, stream and roads were inundated, thus hampering movement of people. District Development Commissioner Pulwama assured people of all possible help and said that free ration would be supplied to the affected people. Most of the people accused that no relief was provided to them by the government so far. The locals said State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was missing from the scene. “Only few ill trained people were spotted on some places trying to join the rescue operations”. However, the district administration claimed that they even provided Rs 5 thousand to those whose house were damaged in the flash floods. (CNS)
