Colonization Movements - Postwar Revival Having declined in the 1860s, African American emigration interest rose again after 1877 with the collapse of Radical Reconstruction and the withdrawal of federal troops from the South. Martin Delany and several South Carolinians formed the Liberia Exodus Joint Stock Steamship Company to transport African Americans to Africa. The companys first ship, the Azor, set sail for Africa in the spring of 1878. But it soon found its way into debtors court, reputedly because of the disreputable activities of its white captain, and the ship was eventually sold for debts. Unfortunately the Liberian Exodus Joint Stock Steamship died quickly thereafter.
