Common core math, so far as I can tell, is teaching kids different - TopicsExpress

Common core math, so far as I can tell, is teaching kids different ways of looking at problems in order to develop problem solving intuition. Most of the techniques being criticized (like counting up to subtract two numbers) are the way many people intuitively solve basic subtraction problems in every day life, like when giving change to people at a cash register. I have yet to see a single common core arithmetic method that I didnt think was absolutely worth learning in elementary school. Please, before you criticize it because thats not the way I did it as a kid or I dont understand how its done, sit down, read the method, and try to figure it out. The kids getting common core math (I dont know about all the other subjects) appear to be getting a solid curriculum that we didnt have access to when we were in school. We did fine, but theyll do better. Time will tell for sure, but Im optimistic.
