Compline – The Holy Hour: “The fruits of the Holy Hour are increased apostolic spirit or zeal in us and a more meritorious use of our own sufferings by knowing how to unite them with those of Christ Jesus: “Jesus meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto Thine.” Evangelization is about the opportunity to “enlighten all people with the brightness of Christ, which gleams over the face of the Church, by preaching the Gospel to every creature.” (Lumen Gentium ). The secret of successful evangelization ministry is the Holy Hour spent before the exposed Blessed Sacrament. The Holy Hour is a sanctifying exercise. This is a participation in the mortal sadness that our Lord Jesus humbled Himself to suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane. At the Holy Hour, we sweeten the bitterness which the Lord felt when he was abandoned by His Apostles; a bitterness that caused Him to reproach His Apostles for not having been able to watch one hour with Him. So, at the Holy Hour, we suffer with Him in reparation for sin and pray with Him for the salvation of sinners. Thus the Holy Hour is essentially an exercise of compassion and love, and self-forgetfulness in order to console the Lord bearing the double weight of our sins and divine wrath. In contemplating the Lord’s anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane, we weep not over our own sorrows but over Jesus, who suffers and agonizes in our place so that God may pardon us. At the Holy Hour, we should not think of ourselves but of Jesus, who sacrifices Himself for us. At the Holy Hour, we should think of so many other souls whom we ought to redeem by sacrificing ourselves with Jesus. The fruits of the Holy Hour are increased apostolic spirit or zeal in us and a more meritorious use of our own sufferings by knowing how to unite them with those of Christ Jesus: “Jesus meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto Thine.”
