Confined Space Safety Confined Space is any enclosed or partially enclosed space either above or below ground with unfavorable natural ventilation where there is a risk of oxygen deficiency or the accumulation of dust or gases which are flammable or hazardous to health. Examples of vessel or confined space include but are not limited to any chamber, tank, floating roof of a tank, tank container, trenches, or pit deeper than 1.5 meters, pipe, duct, column, sewer, boiler, sump, etc. Potential Hazards of Confined Space Oxygen Deficiency = < 19.5% or > 23.5% oxygen concentration. Toxic Materials = Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen sulfide, Welding fumes, Corrosive. Combustibles = Methane, Hydrogen, Acetylene, propane, gasoline fumes. Mechanical Hazards = Exposed rotating parts, Mixtures, Crushers. Fire and explosion = Flammable vapors, excess oxygen etc. Residues which give off gas, fume, or vapor, Electricity and Dust. Safety Precautions: • The confined space must be properly purged and cleared and positively isolated from all process and utility systems by physically disconnecting the piping or by blanking. • Adequate ventilation must be maintained throughout the period of work. • O2 level shall be monitored prior to entry. • Flammable gas test shall be conducted before entry. • Supervisor shall make available valid & signed permit for confined space entry. • Worker shall not work in confined space more than 25 to 3o min. • Entry into the confined space must not be performed in the absence of Standby Man (SBM). • SBM shall ensure availability of a confined space rescue plan with his supervisor. • SBM shall ensure a workable communication mechanism with entrant. • SBM and supervisor shall ensure working of air mover during confined space entry. • Supervisor shall ensure proper lighting but not more than 24volt. • Supervisor shall ensure that electrical equipment of more than 110volt shall not be used , Earthling shall be provided.
