We can confirm now that the Strike would start at exactly 00:00 hours on 10th Dec 2013. The much anticipated strike, feared to be the worst in the history of this country because all the healthcare providers have joined hand in this battle and they say the whole country would come to a stand still and none shall be able to Ignore. Even the Emergency services would come to a stand still!! would this be the Dooms Day? See what the secretary general of KMPDU, Dr. Sultani Matendechero had to say. “Tuesday the 10th of December 2013 is the day that shall go down in history as the one on which a new, all important page was turned in the health sector of this country. This is the day on which we get to speak out, as the health workers of this country, in an unprecedented loud voice, that none shall be able to ignore. UNITY OF PURPOSE For the longest time, the Kenyan health worker has maintained imaginary differences with fellow colleagues. We have allowed mistrust and hatred to grow within us for reasons which have remained hard to fathom. Some wicked opportunists have identified this as a weak point, and turned it into their perennial tool, with which they have continued to mete out untold acts of oppression and mistreatment of health professionals. They have underpaid us, enslaved us, overworked us, and subjected us to all sorts of unacceptable maltreatment. RESPECT As we prepare for battle, I want us all to view this inevitable strike action as our opportunity to restore our value as providers of an essential service. We shall come out and reject the maltreatment and disrespect. We shall all abandon duty and stay away from our work places. We shall in solidarity, make it very clear to those individuals in government, who have enjoyed the opportunity provided by our division, that we are indispensable. Within the short time I have interacted with these individuals in my capacity as your leader, I have been deeply saddened by the manner in which we are taken for granted. This becomes our golden opportunity. That opportunity that comes once in a lifetime. We are setting out to change this unfortunate state of affairs once and for all. TOTAL STRIKE For the very first time, all cadres of health workers shall be on strike at the same time. This will bring all our public facilities to a paralytic standstill. Sending a very strong message about how wrong the perception of our worth has always been. I need not say that such opportunities do not have the habit of presenting themselves multiple times. Hence the unimaginable mistake anyone of us can make, is to dare fail this opportunity by going to work. PLANNING This week shall be a packed one. We shall be on the drawing board, fine-tuning the final plan of execution. I am hereby directing all branch Chairmen and their secretaries, to immediately spearhead the holding of jointly planned inter-cadre meetings within all major facilities around their branches. I have already received tentative plans for some of the facilities in South Rift as well as Western. The national office is in conjunction with the national leadership of all other health worker organizations, finalizing a deployment schedule which shall guide on the presence of national leaders in these high profile meetings. Make sure to involve the press in these forums, so that we can also raise awareness to the general public. My office shall be at hand to offer whatever support that may be required as appropriate. SOLIDARITY AND POWER Lets start investing all our energy in cultivating maximum solidarity for this festivity. Solidarity remains the greatest power of trade unionism. We must leverage on it completely this time round. Our protection and defense shall come solely from solidarity. Lets be totally defiant and cruel to intimidation. Lets us refuse to be intimidated because someone can only ride your back if you bend and let them mount you. Let us encourage each other as we march towards our goal. I do not want to start getting endless calls from scared members, crying about intimidation and asking me to call their administrators to ‘order them to stop calling them to work’. I and my generals will be focusing on the enemy at the time, and hence I expect you to take care of such small issues by being totally defiant and hostile to that trivial form of intimidation. The greatest power of trade unionism, the unbeatable fort of safety, the unbreakable strength, lies in total solidarity…. Use it colleagues, to the maximum. Nothing, and i mean absolutely nothing, can stand in the way of solidarity. Our strike starts at exactly 00:00 hrs on the night ending 9th and beginning 10th of December. This strike shall lay ground for all other demands we wish to make in the future. We fail here, we are done. Lets give it our all.
