Congratulations Alentejo and Portugal Cante Alentejano, a traditional form of music in the Alentejo that relies solely on polyphonic singing, was considered Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO this morning. The bid was approved by a UNESCO committee only five minutes after it convened in Paris at 10.18am (Portuguese time). Portuguese media reports that when the decision was announced the 21-man Grupo Coral e Etnográfico da Casa do Povo de Serpa came into the meeting for a performance of ‘Cante Alentejano’ that elicited rapturous applause. The bid, promoted by the council of Serpa and its local Casa do Cante alongside the Regional Tourism Entity of the Alentejo and Ribatejo, Lisbon’s Casa do Alentejo and Confraria do Cante Alentejano e da Moda, now follows the Mediterranean Diet as yet another Portuguese exponent of Intangible Heritage.
