Congratulations Ben Marcel Santiago! Im so glad youll be able to remain in your home, and continue being an integral part of our our SF community! This new victory again shows that the combination of aggressive grassroots tactics and strong legal defense can slow and even halt Ellis evictions. With the State Legislature ignoring the need for Ellis Act reform, tenants facing displacement have no choice but to aggressively respond as Benito Santiago did in this case. And most importantly, Santiago was not fighting this battle alone. Eviction-Free San Francisco and their supporters did a phenomenal job in building grassroots support and enlisting hundreds of people to back the tenants cause. A longtime political ally of mine used to say that he never started a war, but when one was started against him he decided the terms of the battle and how long it would be fought. When speculators like Harrison declare war on tenants like Benito Santiago, they are now realizing that will face a response not limited to the courtroom.
