That same year the Wolverines qualified for the GROUP 2 playoffs. Itt was the 1st playoff appearance for Woodstown in 10 years. The team won the WJFL Diamond Division. The “BLUE GOO” defense recorded regular season shut-out victories over SALEM, PENNS GROVE and eventual GROUP 1 champion GLASSBORO. The 2013 team also reached the SOUTH GROUP 2 Championship game for the 1st time since 1984. On the road to the finals the Wolverines defeated Sterling (28-12 ) and Bridgeton (14-9 ), in one of the greatest games ever played at Memorial Stadium. 1947 Coached by Joe Irvin the 1947 team finished the season with a share of the TRI-COUNTY CONFERENCE championship. The team was led by “STAR” halfback Ed Jenkins and linemen Bobby Funk and Maurice DuBois. The 47 team was the epitome of “OLD SCHOOL FOOTBALL”. Coach Irvin described this team as “hard-working and in great shape”. They wore leather helmets and played the final season on the original football field which was located directly behind the high school on the ground where the gym, cafeteria and middle school stand today. 1984 Coached by Clint Ware, whom the field they are standing on tonight is named in honor of, the 1984 team won the TRI-COUNTY CONFERENCE championship. In WEEK 8 they defeated Pennsville 12-7 to clinch a spot in the SOUTH JERSEY GROUP 2 playoffs, the 1st playoff appearance in school history. They also reached the GROUP 2 championship game with a home victory over Hammonton in the semi-finals. HONORARY CAPTAINS JOHN FITHIAN (1984)…John was one of the “unsung heroes” of the 84 team. He lead the team with his “hard-nosed and physical play” on the field and “spirit” off-the field. John was a 3-year starter at GUARD and LINEBACKER. He was a 1st team ALL-CONFERENCE selection and ALL-COUNTY player as selected by the Todays Sunbeam. STEVE WARE (1984)…Steve is the son of former Woodstown head coach Clint Ware, who won 164 football games as coach of the Wolverines. During the 1984 season Steve rushed for 1,500 yards (a WHS record). He was a 1st team ALL-SOUTH JERSEY selection, 1st team ALL- CONFERENCE and Today’s Sunbeam PLAYER of the YEAR. Steve went on to play college football at TRENTON STATE (now known as the College of NJ) where he holds the TCNJ record for rushing yards in a single-season 1,237.
