The prestigious national order was bestowed upon Mr. Hashwani, the Chairman of the Hashoo Group, by the King of the Belgians for his outstanding services in the promotion of relations between Pakistan and Belgium and for his remarkable role in the socio-economic development of Pakistan. In his address Ambassador Claes thanked Mr. Hashwani for his loyal commitment to the Kingdom of Belgium and his active support to the embassy over the past 25 years. The Order of Leopold-II is one of the three national Belgian Orders of chivalry. All three Orders have the Belgian Sovereign as Grand Master. They have five grades: Knight, Officer, Knight-Commander, Grand Officer and Grand Cross. The Order of Leopold-II, instituted by His Majesty King Leopold-II in 1900, is awarded for loyal services to the Belgian Monarch and as a sign of his personal gratitude. It is awarded both to distinguished Belgian military and senior civil servants and to foreign nationals. The grade of Knight-Commander is usually reserved for captains of industry and high dignitaries.Belgium has had a diplomatic presence in Karachi since 1948 and the Honorary Consulate, the Ambassador said, symbolised the long-term commitment of Belgium to Pakistans success and the indelible bonds of friendship between the people. Mr. Hashwani is and remains the epitome of that unbreakable friendship, the Ambassador added. In his short acceptance speech, Mr. Hashwani thanked the Ambassador for his kind support and expressed his gratitude to the King of the Belgians for this great honour and reiterated his commitment to the promotion of good relations between the two countries. This is really an honour for Pakistan, myself and my family, he added. The festive event at the Hashoo House was attended by the elite of the city with guests from government and business circles as well as close friends. Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif was represented by Provincial Minister for Labour and Manpower Ashfaq Sarwar. US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson was among the diplomats of various countries who participated in the event. Former Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry was also present at the occasion.
