July 7, 2013 – On June 10, 2013, the office of Haitian Prime Minister, Laurent Salvador Lamothe published a communiqué in which the Prime Minister’s office claimed that Madame Bernice Fidelia, the Minister of Haitian Living Aboard has resigned. Senators John Joel Joseph and Stevens Benoit have been asking for her letter of resignation, to this day the letter is nowhere to be found. Did Ms. Fidelia resign? If she did, why is there no letter of resignation? From Dominican Republic to France, from Canada to South Africa, the Haitian Diaspora is up in arms about the apparent treatment it received from the office of the Prime Minister. This issue has led to a serious movement culminating to many groups from different places around the world wondering what happened to “Our Minister”. Recently, the Haitian Congress has published a public letter to Prime Minister Lamothe requesting an explanation of the questionable resignation of Madame Fidelia. When senator John Joel Joseph questioned the nationality of many government members, Madame Fidelia was one of the persons mentioned. The question is why has the prime minister office published an apparent “false” communiqué? The issue is bigger than Ms. Fidelia and the Haitian diaspora wants to take this opportunity to once and for all resolve this issue of double nationality. The Amended 1987 Haitian Constitution has not settled the issue of double nationality.
