SRI NARSI MEHTA - PART 1 - SRI SRI MURALIDHARA SWAMIJI In this edition of Saint Sketch, we take a look at the great saint from Gujarat, who glorified the path of Bhakti - Shri Narsi Mehta. ----------------------------------- Narasimha Mehta (or) Narsi, as he was dearly called by everybody was born in a village called Junaghat, situated near Porbander of Gujarat. He was born of a family which was very pious and meticulous about Sadhu seva (joyous service to saints). Narsi, from his very young age was immersed in Krishna Bhakti and incessantly chanted Lord’s divine names “Radhe Shyam, Radhe Shyam” - drinking this sweetest nectar all the time. Narsi at his very tender age lost his parents and was brought up by his elder brother. He was very particular that Narsi should, at no point of time feel the loss of his parents and hence showered immense love and kindness upon Narsi. Due to his tight business schedule, he could not spend much time with Narsi and immediately thought of the necessity of a woman in their house, who would look after his little brother as her own son and show love and affection of a mother, as no amount of love shown by others would be equal to that of a mother’s love. Hence Narsi’s brother married a lady who also showed great love and affection upon Narsi. Narsi was also greatly moved by his sister-in-law’s kindness. Though endowed with all great qualities, Narsi had his childhood pranks also. Narsi used to be very irregular to his school and would take a few of his friends to a near-by mango orchard to have their own session headed by him. Though very mischievous and playful, Narsi’s play was not worldly. A Krishna Bhakta by nature, all his plays dwelled around Krishna Leelas. He would make all his friends the cowherd friends (or) gopas and would call himself Krishna and considered the orchard to be the holy Vrindavan. They enacted all the leelas such as Kaliya nardhan (Dance of the Lord on the serpent Kalinga, Govardhana leela, Vana bhojan, etc. as described in Srimad Bhagavatham. Slowly this news spread among the villagers and they all were shocked to see their children attending Narsi’s orchard school instead of their regular school. The school head master complained about this to Narsi’s sister-in-law and asked her to pay attention towards this truant lad who slowly traps all the village children in to his orchard school. Narsi’s brother had gone on a long business trip and hence Narsi was all alone in the house with his sister-in law. Today, after hearing to all these complaints about Narsi, she was very much worried about him , which came out as anger. She scolded him for his mischief and also beat him, which wounded his tender heart. He went outside his house and slowly started walking without any direction, wailing about all these happenings. It was a late evening and the darkness had already started grabbing the sky. Narsi walked a long distance without sensing that he had already lost his path to his house. Walking into a dense forest, he really became frightened listening to roars of the wild beasts and sounds of other animals. He started tiptoeing every footstep in fear and to his awe found a small dilapidated shrine in the midst of this dense forest. With a small sigh of relief, he entered the shrine and saw Lord Shiva in the form of Lingam in the sanctum sanctorum. !!! Will Continue !!! !!!
