Continuing Shanghai impressions. Yesterday I finally got some time - TopicsExpress

Continuing Shanghai impressions. Yesterday I finally got some time afternoon to walk around. Please note - unless you are living in China, around in Shanghai terms is not the same as in most other cities around the world. When I was booking hotel, I asked how far away it was from nearest metro station. Got answer - oh, couple of city blocks. That ended up to be 1.5km from the train station or 15 min walking distance. I dont mind walking, but better to be prepared... The hotel is nearby the area where World Expo was held in 2012. Which also is close the the High Technology Park. That the reason why I decided to stay here - to be (relatively) close to the office. Well, the thing is that life after 6PM is non-existent - streets deserted, no major attractions. So Ive decided to go to the major tourist trap - Nanjing pedestrian street. If it would not be on Saturday, probably my impressions from Shanghai could be a little bit positive. How would I describe it... If you ever been at Shinjuku Station in Tokyo - thats what Peoples Square train station looks like. And thats under the ground. On top it is the same. However contrary to Tokyo I could not mind business on my own while walking on the street - over 1km distance I was offered massage 13 times (I counted). And when I sat down to do people watching (my favorite sport) four times bums and beggars approached asking for money. And they do not get no as an answer - I had to move to another location. I understand that if you are a female or a couple things might be a different, but apparently a single western guy is a favorite target for scam artists. The best way to deal with them - just dont acknowledge their existence - walk past by them. Today will go to French Quarter, hope the impressions will be better.
