Conversation with one of my students yesterday: Me: Who is your favourite actor? Her: I like champagne. Me: Thats nice. So do I, but it is expensive! Who is your favourite actor? Her: Champagne. I like champagne. Me: I know, you told me, but who is your favourite actor. (Showing the question in the book) - look. Her: (Looking confused). I said, I like champagne. Champagne. Me: OK. Great. (Thinking maybe I need to check her understanding of the word actor, but also thinking this is a student at the end of Upper Intermediate level so she should really know all the language Im using). Her: Yes, you know, Madonnas former husband! Champagne! Me: Oh (cue sound of penny dropping)! Do you mean Sean Penn? Her: Yes (looking as if the teacher has lost his marbles), thats what I said. Champagne! I think I need to do a bit more work on pronunciation with this group. :)
