Costa Rica - in Pictures - Vacationer ------------------------------------------------ Waterways --------------- Costa Ricas rivers are not suited for navigation except in the lowlands. In northern and northeastern parts of the nation, the major river system is the San Juan, which rises in Lake Nicaragua - a vast lake just across the Nicaraguan border. Four tributaries of the San Juan network rise in Costa Rica - the Frio, San Carlos, Sarapiqui, and Chirripo. To the west, the tempisque river and its branches rise in the Guaranacaste Plain and empty into the Gulf of Nicoya. In the central area, two rivers provide drainage - the Reventazon, which rises near Cartago and eventually enters the Caribbean, and the Rio Grande de tarcoles, which rises north of the Reventazon on the Central Puntarenas. In the southeast, the major network consists of the Sixaola River and its tributaries, and in the southwest, the General River and the Rio Grande de terraba provide drainage.
