Couldnt sleep till i finished this poem. I know most know my romantic poetry but i do write other stuff haha. This poem is a social poem. And its one that i have decided to share! If i should have a son if i should have a son.. i will name him Joaquin. when i teach him to write his name i will prick his finger and hell use the blood for ink. while i define each letter as he painfully forces line after bloody line to spell his name, stabbing deeper into his wound.. And he will not know why. when he comes to age. i will hate him, and teach him what the world thinks of him. i will whip him to confusion, and spit on hopes and dreams. and when he finally gives in to my mental torture. i will hold him, comb his thick black hair.. Caress his trembling confused body by this spontaneous act of love.. and tell him you are Joaquin, you are everything america hates. you are an immigrant who bought land where you discovered gold and success! Soon your children were killed, your wife was raped and then murdered, your land was stolen.. and you were forced to watch as it happened. whipped as a pig, and then finally... left to live. you are Joaquin. your anger became your mask, as you led rebellions against white settlements taking what was rightfully yours. cattle, food, and money. your people cheered and sang your name as you gave what was yours to them. you are EVERYJoaquin who was tortured and slaughtered simply because they bore your name in the attempt to catch you. you are every wanted poster with your description and the bullet that finally pierced your back. the noose that hung dead fruit on the branch of a willow tree where you swayed for two days. As a sign of victory. The two stakes that pierced your head and the other for your body in the entrance of the town Lynchburg. where later that night the campesinos came to save your body from any more humiliation and buried your body in a forgotten legend.. you are Joaquin .. hijo i will say I gave you the name Joaquin to remind and teach you that there are still things in life worth fighting for, there are still things in life worth DYING for! CANT YOU SEE?! The pain scarring your veins,in this anglo society. The oppression of our people! And the paradox of a satisfied soul and a full stomach. your name is only a suit. intertwined with rebellion, and chicanismo. a symbol of anger, and oppression, The name Joaquin is sacred, not because its your name, but it was his! Stand! And never kneel before any man for now you have a reputation to hold. and understand my son, you are a soldier and your mom a warrior, your father a fighter. and you are my son . You are Joaquin Murrieta. -Jessie Miranda
